UN Reports Half of Children Malnourished in North Darfur, Sudan

UNICEF warns of child malnutrition crisis amid escalating conflict in North Darfur.

The situation in North Darfur is dire, with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) sounding the alarm on what they describe as an “unprecedented level” of malnutrition among children. The agency is calling for immediate access to those trapped in the conflict, which has escalated dangerously in recent weeks.

    Escalating Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis

The backdrop of this crisis is a brutal conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have recently intensified their military operations after capturing the city of el-Fasher in late October.

Since the conflict erupted in 2023, it has resulted in:

    • Tens of thousands of deaths.
    • Displacement of over 12 million people.
    • Famine conditions in several regions, making this the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis” according to UN assessments.

    Shocking Statistics on Child Malnutrition

    UNICEF’s recent findings reveal that:

    • 53% of 500 children screened in Um Baru locality were acutely malnourished.
    • 1 in 6 children suffered from severe acute malnutrition, a condition that poses immediate life-threatening risks.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell emphasized the urgency, stating that “time becomes the most critical factor” in these situations. She urged for immediate assistance, warning that every day without proper access could result in more preventable deaths.

    The Aftermath of El-Fasher’s Fall

Many of those now in Um Baru fled from el-Fasher, escaping violence and atrocities reported by RSF troops, which include:

    • Killings
    • Sexual assaults
    • Detentions

El-Fasher, now under RSF control, has been described by UN officials as a “crime scene.” Reports from the UN humanitarian team suggest the city is largely deserted, with survivors living in makeshift camps under dire conditions.

    International Response and Continued Violence

Despite calls for aid and a ceasefire from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the RSF has dismissed peace proposals, labeling them as “wishful thinking.” Meanwhile, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan of the Sudanese army insists that any political resolution must include the disarmament of the RSF.

The ongoing violence is exacerbating the humanitarian crisis, with reports indicating that each passing day brings increased levels of suffering for civilians. The UN Security Council has been alerted to the immense challenges, with officials reiterating the need for immediate action to prevent further deterioration.

    Conclusion

The situation in North Darfur is a stark reminder of the complex and tragic consequences of armed conflict, particularly for vulnerable populations like children. As we continue to monitor this evolving crisis, it is crucial for the international community to respond with urgency and compassion.
