The Importance of Human Connection in Wellness

The Importance of Human Connection in Wellness

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a restorative yoga class at The Retreat, where I met a couple with whom I reconnected over the course of my four-day stay. Engaging with fellow guests during hikes and sharing mocktails was a refreshing change from my previous visits to destination spas, where interaction often felt limited to clinicians and therapists behind closed doors.

Cultivating Connection in a Post-COVID World

Since the pandemic, Diana Stobo, the founder of The Retreat, has noticed a significant shift in guest behavior. People are hungry for social interaction, which has become increasingly rare in our digitally connected world. As Stobo pointed out:

    • “No one hangs out anymore,” reflecting on how social media and remote work have isolated individuals.
    • Guests naturally gravitate towards communal spaces, often chatting on the meditation deck despite staff needing to maintain a tranquil environment.

This observation is not just an anecdote but a critical insight into the evolving needs of wellness seekers today. Visitors are not just looking for a place to rejuvenate their bodies; they are searching for a sense of community.

The Launch of Santosha Wellness Club

In response to this growing need, Stobo launched the Santosha Wellness Club last June, a $4 million investment aimed at fostering community. This facility features:

    • 10 guest lofts
    • A gym and yoga studio
    • An infinity pool
    • Two restaurants led by acclaimed Costa Rican chef Pablo Bonilla

The Santosha Wellness Club encourages mingling, offering a vibrant atmosphere with cocktails and live music, contrasting the traditional quiet spa experience.

    Redefining Longevity and Connection

The conversation around wellness has shifted dramatically in recent years. With the World Health Organization declaring loneliness a global health crisis in 2023, Stobo emphasizes that:

    • Longevity is not solely about diet or exercise.
    • “What’s the point of living to 102 if you’re lonely?” invites us to reconsider how we value our connections.

This perspective is crucial as we navigate a world where physical health is often prioritized over emotional and social well-being. It raises an essential question: how do we create spaces that nurture both?

    Conclusion

The Retreat and initiatives like the Santosha Wellness Club highlight a significant trend in the wellness industry—prioritizing human connection as a vital aspect of health. As we move forward, it will be essential to integrate social interaction into our wellness practices, ensuring that as we seek to extend our lives, we also enrich our experiences through meaningful relationships.
