Arosa: A Hidden Gem in the Swiss Alps

On the approach to Arosa in the breathtaking Graubünden Alps, the journey is nothing short of enchanting. The road is lined with charming mountain chapels, their spires reaching towards the sky, hinting at the adventure that lies ahead. As I navigate the twisting roads, flanked by rugged farmhouses and deep ravines, I feel as though I’m heading toward a well-guarded secret of a holiday destination.

    A Fairytale Village

Upon arriving, I am greeted by scenes reminiscent of a storybook. Families glide gracefully on the frozen lake, children sled down snow-covered streets, and the resort’s mascots—a delightful group of brown bears—seem to embody the joyous spirit of the village. The Narnia-like lamp-posts illuminate the falling snow, casting a magical glow that transforms the place into a winter wonderland.

I am here for a week with my wife and two children, cherishing a tradition that has been passed down through generations. My Swiss partner’s family has been visiting Arosa for over a century, drawn here for its low-key charm and the fact that it is often overlooked in favor of more popular ski resorts like St. Moritz and Verbier.

    Exploring Arosa’s Unique Charm

Nestled on a high plateau just an hour south of Chur—Switzerland’s oldest city—Arosa is enveloped by dense forests and majestic peaks. The village feels like a well-kept secret, its historical significance dating back to the 14th century when farmers sought refuge from the looming Habsburgs. A visit here is like stepping back in time.

Arosa is not just about skiing; it is a celebration of the Swiss alpine experience. Here are some highlights:

    • The Arosa Bear Sanctuary: This facility offers a unique insight into animal welfare, housing rescued bears in a picturesque setting. Even in winter, the bears’ habitat provides stunning views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains.
    • Squirrel Trail: A themed snowshoe trail that delights children and adults alike, allowing us to follow the tracks of playful red squirrels.
    • Unique Dining Experiences: Dining at Tschuggenstübli, a former cheese dairy, provides an authentic taste of local cuisine with dishes like bündnerfleisch and käseschnitte.
    • Grand Arosa Pop-Up Hotel: A contemporary twist on traditional ski lodging, this pop-up hotel is a vibrant and stylish option for those looking for a unique stay.

    A Different Ski Experience

Unlike other ski resorts, Arosa offers a refreshing absence of British accents and crowded slopes. The strict building regulations maintain the village’s traditional aesthetics, preserving its charm and authenticity. It’s a place that feels untouched by the passage of time, reminiscent of the Switzerland of decades past.

As my family enjoys our time together, from skiing to tobogganing, laughter fills the air—especially when my son finds himself tumbling into a fluffy snowbank, emerging with a grin. It’s moments like these that solidify Arosa’s status as a magical family destination.

    Conclusion

Reflecting on our week, I note how reluctant we all are to leave. Arosa, with its enchanting atmosphere, delightful wildlife, and modern yet whimsical accommodations, has captured our hearts. It may not be the traditional Swiss ski experience that many seek, but perhaps that is exactly why it feels like the perfect escape for us.

For those interested in experiencing the charm of Arosa for themselves, singles and doubles at the Grand Arosa Pop-Up Hotel start from €117 room-only. For more information, visit the original news source.
