Who Will Be the No. 2 Pick in the Draft?

As we approach the NFL draft, the consensus is clear regarding the No. 1 overall pick. The Raiders are poised to select Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman Trophy winner and national champion, to address their quarterback needs. However, the real intrigue lies in the second pick held by the Jets.

With no other quarterbacks considered for the top 10, the Jets have the luxury of choosing from a pool of dynamic defensive players. The leading candidates for this pick are:

    • Arvell Reese (Ohio State)
    • Caleb Downs (Alabama)
    • Rueben Bain Jr (Miami)
    • David Bailey (Texas Tech)

While the Jets could opt for a receiver or even trade out of the pick, it seems likely that their selection will be from one of these four defensive prospects. Each player comes with their strengths and weaknesses:

    • Reese: A hybrid linebacker/edge-rusher, his dynamic play style stands out. However, if the Jets see him strictly as a linebacker, they might pass on him for a more traditional pass rusher.
    • Downs: The top safety in the draft, but the value of safeties has diminished in recent years. Selecting him at No. 2 would be a significant statement.
    • Bailey and Bain: Both are explosive edge-rushers with potential but come with questions about their refinement and technique.

The choice boils down to whether the Jets prioritize the best player available or the potential for dominant pass rushing.

    Where Will Malik Willis Sign?

Malik Willis emerges as the most intriguing free agent this offseason. Despite limited playing time, he is expected to command at least $30 million annually. His evolution as a player, especially during his stint as Green Bay’s backup, shows promise. His attributes include:

    • Incredible running ability
    • Improved passing skills with demonstrated poise
    • Experience in a complex offense under Matt LaFleur

With teams like the Cardinals, Dolphins, and Steelers showing interest, Willis could be a game-changer. The Cardinals have coaching continuity that could benefit him, while the Steelers have the infrastructure to support his growth. The potential for a $100 million contract looms large, especially given the mediocre quarterback draft class this year.

    The Quarterback Carousel

The quarterback market is heating up, with Willis likely being the first domino to fall. Several notable names are available:

    • Kirk Cousins
    • Kyler Murray (soon to be released)
    • Tua Tagovailoa
    • Geno Smith

Among these, Anthony Richardson stands out as a player with immense potential despite inconsistencies. His previous relationship with Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell might make Minnesota a prime destination for him, especially if they decide not to go with an aging quarterback like Cousins.

Prepare for a Flurry of Trades

This offseason promises a flurry of trades, particularly as teams look to enhance their rosters amid a less than stellar free-agent class. Key players to watch include:

    • Maxx Crosby: The Raiders’ pass rusher is seeking a trade, with teams weighing the hefty asking price for a player nearing the end of his prime.
    • AJ Brown: His tumultuous season with the Eagles raises questions about his future. The Eagles’ asking price suggests they are prepared for a significant return, especially given his connection to the Patriots.
    • Other notable names include DJ Moore, Brian Thomas Jr, Mac Jones, Nick Herbig, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Trent McDuffie.

With the landscape shifting rapidly, expect teams to be active in both the trade and free-agent markets to secure the talent necessary to compete.
