Jérémy Jacquet: A Rising Star in Football

After an 18-month hiatus from professional football, the story of Jérémy Jacquet is nothing short of remarkable. This time last year, he was recalled from a loan at Clermont Foot in Ligue 2, and now, he has made headlines by signing with Liverpool for a staggering £60 million. This transition begs the question: what makes Jacquet a player worth such an investment?

    From Setbacks to Success

The conditions at Rennes have always been conducive for nurturing talent, but Jacquet’s journey is particularly noteworthy. His generation, including stars like Désiré Doué and Mathys Tel, has consistently pushed each other to excel. However, Jacquet faced significant challenges during his teenage years. He experienced a dramatic growth spurt, adding 10cm in just a year, which led to injuries and required surgery. His former manager, Laurent Viaud, recalls:

    • “For Jérém, it was growth injuries, Osgood-Schlatter, things like that. You know you’re going to lose time.”
    • Despite this, Jacquet’s response to adversity has been inspiring. Upon returning, he displayed a fierce desire to reclaim his place in football.

    The Return and Resurgence

Jacquet’s comeback was fueled by a new mentality. Viaud noted that young players often gain a fresh perspective after being sidelined. Jacquet’s hunger to improve was palpable, almost requiring management to temper his enthusiasm. This drive, coupled with his natural talent, allowed him to flourish once again:

    • Jacquet is recognized as a “complete” defender, possessing speed, aggression, and excellent technical skills.
    • His early years as a midfield player helped him develop a unique football IQ, drawing inspiration from the likes of Paul Pogba.

    A New Role and Leadership

As Jacquet transitioned back to a defensive role, he embraced the tactical changes suggested by his coaches, evolving into a player who combines defensive prowess with the creativity of a midfielder. His loan spell at Clermont Foot was pivotal, offering him invaluable experience in a competitive environment.

Upon returning to Rennes, Jacquet quickly established himself as a key player, even amidst significant competition. His performances were instrumental in Rennes’ resurgence in the league:

    • Jacquet started 11 of the final 14 league matches, showcasing his importance to the team’s strategy.
    • This season, he has maintained high performance levels, missing just two games due to suspension.

    The Future Looks Bright

With the addition of a younger centre-back, Jacquet has taken on a more senior role, demonstrating leadership qualities both on and off the pitch. While he acknowledges his occasional nonchalance, his confidence and ambition are evident, especially as he prepares for the challenges of the Premier League.

    Potential and Comparisons

Jacquet has drawn comparisons to some of the greats, with many seeing him as a potential heir to Virgil van Dijk. Viaud, who scouted for Liverpool, suggests:

    • “In a lot of areas, Jérém looks like him. I would almost say he is faster than Van Dijk.”
    • Jacquet’s unique blend of skills is likened to Marcel Desailly on defense and Laurent Blanc in attack, promising an exciting future in football.

As Rennes’ record sale, surpassing even Ousmane Dembélé, Jacquet stands poised to redefine the role of modern defenders.
