US-Brazil relations took a sharp downturn Monday after US President Donald Trump criticised the coup trial of his right-wing ally, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, calling it a “witch hunt” and urging authorities to “leave Bolsonaro alone”. Bolsonaro faces charges of leading a criminal plot to overturn the 2022 election, risking up to 40 years in prison.
