Skiers and snowboarders flock to Colorado each winter for its legendary slopes, but I’d argue there’s one mountain town that’s just as magical when the snow melts. Summer in Breckenridge brings a different kind of magic—one with vibrant wildflower meadows, alpine lakes, and a lively downtown that comes to life with festivals, art walks, and patio dining.
I lived in Colorado for a few years and have hiked, camped, skied, and explored Breckenridge in every season. I still visit multiple times a year, and if you ask me, summer is one of the most underrated times to explore Colorado’s mountain towns. Lauren Swanson, a seasoned Breckenridge local and the founder of Socially Queued, a local marketing, PR, and communications agency, agrees, saying, “Summer is what first brought me to Breckenridge 13 years ago, and it’s still the season that keeps me here.”
With stunning hiking trails, scenic gondola rides, and endless opportunities to relax among breathtaking mountain views, Breckenridge is a summer getaway you won’t forget.
Here’s everything you need to know to plan a trip that showcases the best of Colorado in the warm alpine sunshine.
Know Before You Go

Breckenridge’s base elevation is about 9,600 feet above sea level, so the altitude is no joke. Take it easy on your first day, drink plenty of water, and don’t be surprised if you feel winded quicker than usual. If you plan to hike a 14er (that is, a mountain with a peak elevation over 14,000 feet above sea level), like Quandary Peak, give yourself time to acclimate first.
Additionally, while Breckenridge is known for skiing, many don’t realize summer is pretty busy, too. It’s a good idea to book accommodations in advance, especially on weekends or around summer festivals. Parking in town can be limited, but Breckenridge has an excellent free bus system that runs throughout town.
It’s also worth noting summer weather in the mountains can change quickly. Mornings might be sunny and warm, but thunderstorms often roll in by afternoon. Before setting out on a long hike, check the radar. Getting caught in a storm at a high elevation can be dangerous; I’ve experienced it myself, and it’s not something you want to deal with. It’s best to start your hikes early, monitor the forecast, and always pack a rain jacket, sunscreen, and a few layers, as temperatures can drop quickly on the peaks.
Best Things to Do

Hike Quandary Peak.
If you’re up for a challenge, hiking Quandary Peak is an unforgettable experience and one of my favorite things to do in Breckenridge during the summer.
As one of 58 14ers in Colorado, the summit rewards with unbelievable views that stretch for miles. It’s a popular route in the summer, so start early to avoid crowds (and thunderstorms), and keep your phone ready to capture the beautiful wildflowers that bloom throughout the area.
If you’re looking for a shorter trail or prefer a different way to experience the area, Swanson shares, “The trail network is incredible, but there’s also great access to paddle sports: whitewater rafting, stand-up paddleboarding, and duckying (inflatable kayaking) are all close by.”
Take advantage of the BreckConnect Gondola and Epic Discovery.
Hop on the free BreckConnect Gondola and head up to the Epic Discovery adventure park. There’s something for everyone here: a ropes course, an alpine slide, mini golf, and even a scenic roller coaster that winds through the trees.
Enjoy mountain biking.
Breckenridge has plenty of mountain biking trails, but another exciting option is riding the Colorado SuperChair lift up the mountain and cruising down, soaking in the views both ways.
Go paddleboarding at Maggie Pond.
This pond, located at the base of Peak 9 and just a short walk from Main Street, offers stunning views of the Tenmile mountain range. Its convenient location makes it a terrific spot for visitors and families who enjoy being out on the water. It’s also a great way to relax and get some exercise after a hike, providing time in nature without overexerting yourself.
Spend time whitewater rafting in the Rockies.
Summertime is prime rafting season in Colorado, and Breckenridge is a great place to experience this thrill. My whole family experienced this one summer, and we still talk about it to this day. I recommend booking ahead of time through a tour company.

The Breckenridge Food and Wine Festival, held on July 25–27, 2025, offers a fun-filled weekend of tastings and entertainment. Guests can sip a variety of wines, enjoy live music and DJ sets, and take part in special events like the VIP wine pairing dinner and the fun Sunday Brunch and Vines event, or simply stroll Main Street and savor a glass in the summer sun.
International Festival of Arts
The Breckenridge International Festival of Arts (BIFA) returns Aug. 15–24, 2025, bringing a vibrant mix of performances, environmental installations, and interactive exhibits to town with a mix of outdoor elements.
Swanson says, “One of my favorite parts of BIFA is the Trail Mix activations, where you can hike or bike on local trails and stumble onto live music performances or whimsical outdoor installations.”
She adds, “I’m also excited to check out Spark, a dreamy, low-impact light show that replaces traditional fireworks with thousands of silent, biodegradable sparks floating through the air.”
Hogfest: Bacon & Bourbon
From Aug. 22–24, 2025, Hogfest: Bacon & Bourbon invites guests to indulge in bold flavors and smooth sips. This lively weekend celebration pairs premium whiskeys and bourbons with delicious bacon dishes. Set against the scenic backdrop of Breckenridge, it offers the perfect mix of savory bites, craft cocktails, and a mountain town atmosphere, with live music and VIP tastings rounding out the fun.

Hotel Alpenrock Breckenridge, one of the town’s newest properties, expertly blends an alpine ambience with chic decor. The hotel has more than 200 rooms, three dining spots, outdoor hot tubs, a gear valet, a fitness center, and concierge service.
The Lodge at Breckenridge
If you’re heading to Breckenridge, there’s a good chance the mountain views are high on your must-see list—and for good reason. The scenery here never fails to impress, and finding a hotel that takes full advantage of it makes all the difference. According to Swanson, The Lodge at Breckenridge has the best view in town. With more than 50 rooms, a cozy alpine feel, an on-site restaurant and bar, and outdoor hot tubs perfect for soaking in the surroundings, this lodge is a top pick for anyone seeking breathtaking vistas and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Gravity Haus
Swanson describes Gravity Haus as having a fun, adventure-focused energy, also calling out its walkable location near everything in downtown Breckenridge. Breckenridge Brewery
The town’s flagship location for Breckenridge Brewery is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. It’s home to delicious brews, casual vibes, and a patio that’s ideal on sunny afternoons. It’s one of my favorite places to go after a long hike in the area.
Blue River Bistro
If you’re looking for something a bit more upscale yet approachable, Blue River Bistro is known for its craft cocktails and hearty Colorado fare. It’s a great dinner spot for a date night or celebration, but definitely make a reservation in advance.
Downstairs at Eric’s
I make a point to stop here almost every trip. A must-visit in Breckenridge, Downstairs at Eric’s is especially family-friendly, with an arcade area that’s always a hit with my toddler. The menu features top-notch pizza and ice-cold beer, making it a fantastic choice for a fun, casual meal for everyone.
The Gold Pan Saloon
Swanson says, “The Gold Pan Saloon is my go-to spot for a drink—you can usually grab a barstool next to some interesting locals, and the old Wild West vibe is still going strong. They say it holds the oldest liquor license west of the Mississippi.” Visitors rave about the Western vibe and the bloody marys.
Castaways Cove
If you’re after island vibes in the heart of the mountains, Swanson recommends Castaways Cove, a hidden tiki bar just steps from the Blue River Bistro. She describes it as a tropical escape tucked into the mountains. It’s known for its laid-back atmosphere, poke bowls, coconut shrimp, and refreshing mai tais.
