When the summer heat burns off and the autumn foliage rolls in, countries all across the world beckon travelers. But if the thought of rolling hills, dramatic mountains, and pristine lakes sounds like the ultimate fall trip, you wouldn’t be alone.

That’s because Switzerland and its gorgeous countryside ranked as the top dream destination for fall travel, according to a new report by Pinterest that was shared with Travel + Leisure. In fact, searches for the Swiss countryside were up 367 percent, according to the company.

The 2025 Pinterest Fall Trend Report explored trends in fashion, decor, beauty, and travel.

“This season, Pinterest users are transforming their spaces with style that speaks to both comfort and creativity,” the company wrote in its report. “For fall 2025, it’s all about elevating the everyday, making every corner an inspiring, unique escape—no matter your square footage or budget.”

In Switzerland, the months of October and November are usually considered the low season, sandwiched between the warm days of summer and the popular winter ski season. That typically translates to fewer crowds clamoring for the amazing activities on offer.

Go hiking in the Engadin Valley, spot colorful foliage in Grindelwald, or head to Interlaken to explore the lake shores or take in the views from the mountain cable car. Enjoy the car-free village of Stoos, which is accessible by the world’s steepest funicular railroad, or explore another car-free hamlet of Appenzell, which is filled with rolling fields and pastures perfect for an autumnal picnic.

Beyond Switzerland, travelers also searched for postcard-worthy destinations like the Scottish countryside, the German countryside, and cottages in the English countryside. Travelers honed in on picture-perfect destinations like Edinburgh—which offers a plethora of foliage-dappled fall walks and cozy pubs—and the Cotswolds, which is dotted with quaint villages like Castle Combe, Bibury, and Stow-on-the-Wold.

Travelers hoping to stick closer to home can still find plenty of amazing destinations across the United States to take in the fall foliage from New England and upstate New York to Colorado and beyond.

Traveling during shoulder season can also save money. In fact, a recent study found the average price of airfare was 57 percent more expensive when booked during the peak week of the Christmas holiday compared to the last week of August. The same study found tickets to Walt Disney World, for example, were 33 percent more expensive in December compared to the park’s shoulder season in September.
