Exploring Budget Skiing in Austria: A Family Adventure

When I suggested to my son Osian that we might go skiing in Austria during the February half-term, I was met with an enthusiastic response. The idea of a family skiing trip, complete with the glitz of a luxury chalet, seemed enticing. However, the reality of such holidays often involves a hefty price tag, especially when considering catered options. Instead, we decided on a more economical path—youth hostelling.

    Choosing the Right Accommodation

For many families, the allure of a catered chalet is often overshadowed by budget constraints. While private apartments can offer slope access at more reasonable prices, they typically require a minimum stay of seven nights. This can be challenging for families with limited time or finances. Hotels present a solution, but they often come with their own set of costs. Thus, our decision to stay at St Josefsheim in Schruns, the first youth hostel in the Montafon ski area, was a refreshing alternative.

    • The hostel is located close to the railway station and a bus stop.
    • Only a short walk from the gondola station, ensuring easy access to skiing.
    • Offers a range of accommodations including double rooms and bunk beds.
    • Features a shared kitchen and a restaurant/bar for communal dining.

    The Skiing Experience

Schruns provides easy access to five ski areas in the Montafon valley, known for their reliable snowfall and excellent pistes. The WildPass lift pass covers these areas, allowing us to tailor our skiing experience:

    • Golm: Ideal for younger children with its new kindergarten and fun park.
    • Silvretta Montafon: The largest ski area with 140 km of marked runs.
    • Conveniently located, with most amenities within a five-minute walk.

During our stay, we enjoyed a mix of skiing and local culture. The town celebrated its annual carnival, adding a festive spirit to our adventures as we mingled with locals and other travelers.

    A Day on the Slopes

Our mornings began early, often in a bustling kitchen filled with families sharing breakfast. After gearing up, we set off for the slopes, where the beauty of the Montafon region unfolded before us.

    We experienced:

    • Stunning views while skiing on softly powdered trails.
    • Warm and inviting mountain huts offering local delicacies.
    • Quiet, serene skiing paths through snow-laden fir trees.

    Cultural Connections

One of the most memorable aspects of our trip was the sense of connection we felt with the local community. By choosing public transport and engaging with fellow travelers at the hostel, we immersed ourselves in the region’s authentic atmosphere.

    Final Thoughts

As we concluded our skiing adventure, taking a night tobogganing and soaking in the beautiful surroundings, I realized that the true luxury of our trip was not found in lavish accommodation or gourmet meals, but in the experiences we shared and the connections we made. It was a reminder of what travel is truly about: bonding with family, exploring new cultures, and creating lasting memories.

For those considering a ski trip to Austria, I encourage you to explore budget-friendly options like St Josefsheim. With beds starting at €30 per person in shared dorms and private rooms available, it’s an affordable way to enjoy the Alps.
