Exploring the Balkans: A Family Adventure through Albania and Montenegro

As I step into the humble abode of our hosts in rural Albania, I am greeted by the exuberant cheer of a six-year-old championing a game of Uno. This simple yet engaging card game serves as a delightful icebreaker amidst the impending storm outside. The dim light of the corrugated iron home contrasts with the vibrant energy of laughter bouncing against the tin roof as hail begins to hammer down. It is moments like these that truly encapsulate the spirit of rural hospitality, where laughter drowns out the thunder and chaos of the weather.

    A Journey Begins

This is day two of an exciting week-long journey with Undiscovered Balkans, a guided expedition that intertwines hiking through the breathtaking Peaks of the Balkans with family-friendly activities. As we traverse the stunning landscapes of Albania and Montenegro, I am reminded of the beauty that lies beyond the crowded tourist trails.

    From Podgorica to Lëpushë

Our adventure kicks off in Podgorica, Montenegro’s understated capital. Meeting our knowledgeable guide, Aurora, along with Emma, a co-founder of Undiscovered Balkans, sets a positive tone for the days ahead. As we transition from the heat of the city to the refreshing waters of the Cemi River, I realize how vital these cooling spots are for both locals and travelers alike.

    Immersed in Local Culture

Arriving in the serene village of Lëpushë, it’s hard not to be captivated by the surrounding orchards and limestone peaks. This village, with its rich cultural tapestry, offers a stark contrast to the overcrowded trails of the Peaks of the Balkans.

    • Community Engagement: The day trip to the shepherd’s dwelling, organized by Nina from the Shepherd’s Way project, introduces us to the ancient practice of transhumance, recently recognized by UNESCO. This initiative empowers local shepherds while preserving their unique culture.
    • Simple Pleasures: Our first day in Albania is filled with baking bread, engaging in playful competitions, and sipping on mountain tea, showcasing the essence of communal life.

    Lessons in Patience

As the weather disrupts our plans for sheep herding, we find ourselves embracing the art of boredom—a surprisingly enriching experience. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best cultural immersion comes from simply being present.

    The Peaks Await

Our first hike, leading us to the summit of Maja e Vajushës, is a thrilling experience, blending physical exertion with breathtaking views. The journey illustrates the geographical intricacies of this region, where borders are drawn by mountain ranges and valleys.

    Exploring Theth

Descending into Theth, I am struck by the stark beauty of the landscape. The contrast between the vibrant natural surroundings and the remnants of past conflicts, like abandoned gun posts, paints a complex picture of the region’s history.

    Reflections on Modernity

As we transition from the tranquility of the mountains to the bustling town of Shkodër, the rapid pace of change becomes evident. The presence of construction and urban development juxtaposed with our serene mountain experiences highlights the dynamic nature of this beautiful country.

    Conclusion: A Privileged Perspective

Our journey through the Balkans has been a tapestry woven with moments of joy, cultural exchange, and natural beauty. The privilege of sharing this experience with my children, surrounded by age-old traditions and stunning landscapes, is a treasure that will remain with us long after the trip ends.
