Puffin Watching in the Inner Hebrides, Scotland

Last April, I had the pleasure of taking my teenagers on a puffin-watching expedition to Lunga, off Mull in the Treshnish Isles. We joined an organized tour through Staffa Tours, which began with a scenic ferry ride. What a delightful experience it was! The guides were exceptionally accommodating, especially considering my mobility issues. We were taken aback by how approachable and friendly the puffins are, allowing us to observe them from as close as five feet away. We’re already planning to return next spring, which is, without a doubt, the prime time to witness these charming birds in their thousands.

Stunning Architecture in the Heart of Surrey

The Grade I-listed Claremont Landscape Garden near Esher is a must-visit in spring. If you time your visit well, you can also explore a hidden gem just half a mile away: the Homewood, a stunning 1930s modernist villa designed by architect Patrick Gwynne. This villa is only accessible through pre-booked guided tours on specific Fridays and Saturdays from April to October. The house is a marvel, with an abundance of natural light flooding through the floor-to-ceiling windows. On a sunny spring day, the accompanying garden, featuring a rhododendron tunnel, bamboo thicket, and water gardens, creates a serene environment perfect for relaxation.

    Sheffield’s Tudor Turret

One of my family’s favorite outings in spring is to explore the historic Sheffield Manor Lodge. The Turret is rich in history, and my daughter delights in sharing that Mary, Queen of Scots was once detained there. The location offers children’s trails, outdoor games, and crafting sessions. We’ve created stained glass kites, learned about frog life cycles, and even participated in outdoor yoga. The surroundings are breathtaking, featuring a lavender maze, apothecary gardens, wildflower meadows, and a charming café that serves the best rhubarb treats.

Artistic Treasure Hunt on the North York Moors

For those seeking a blend of art and nature, I highly recommend the project called Hanging Stones by Andy Goldsworthy in Rosedale. This unique experience combines fresh air and stunning landscapes with artistic expression. Several decayed structures have been transformed into artworks, connected by a six-mile walking path. Families can enjoy this interactive treasure hunt style adventure where participants must book a slot to obtain a key and map. The cost is modest at £10 for adults, while students and those under 18 can join for free. This is a brilliant way to engage kids while appreciating art and nature simultaneously.

    Dazzling Azaleas in Gloucestershire

Every spring, I take my family to Westonbirt Arboretum near Tetbury, where nature bursts forth in a vibrant display of colors. The Arboretum spans 245 hectares and showcases over 15,000 specimens from around the world. In spring, the azaleas and rhododendrons bloom in stunning shades of white, red, and pink. My teenagers love exploring the treetop walkway, and it’s always a treat to enjoy tea and cake at the café after a day of roaming through the lush landscapes.

Wild Garlic and Lily Ponds in Pembrokeshire

For a picturesque spring outing, Bosherston Lakes is an absolute gem. Nestled within limestone valleys, the area is renowned for its stunning lily displays. The journey begins through ancient woodlands carpeted with fragrant wild garlic, leading to serene lily ponds. Here, you might catch a glimpse of otters or herons. Following the path to Broad Haven South reveals breathtaking coastal views. Conclude your adventure with a stop at the Stackpole Walled Gardens café, supporting a fantastic cause while enjoying the Pembrokeshire sun.

Kites Fluttering in the Chiltern Skies

One of my favorite pastimes in the UK during spring is kite flying at Dunstable Downs. The open hills and consistent breeze create the ideal environment for letting our kites soar. There’s something incredibly joyful about watching the vibrant colors dance in the sky alongside fellow kite enthusiasts. Afterward, we love to relax with a picnic blanket, indulging in homemade treats while soaking in the beautiful scenery.

A Memorable Walk in the Cotswolds

The circular walk from Bourton-on-the-Water to the Upper and Lower Slaughters encapsulates the essence of spring. This scenic route offers a delightful display of blossoming trees, daffodils, and nesting swans. The Slaughters, contrary to their name, derive from an Old English term meaning “muddy place,” which aptly describes the terrain. While Bourton-on-the-Water is a popular tourist destination, the walk towards the Slaughters provides a calming escape, enhanced by the soothing sounds of rivers and birdsong.

Luscious Blooms and Afternoon Tea in Devon

Each spring, my family makes a pilgrimage to Killerton gardens in South Devon, eager to witness the magnificent magnolia blossoms on the slopes of Dolbury Hill. The vibrant pinks and whites are a spectacular sight, and it’s a joy to watch the kids frolic on the freshly cut lawns while their grandparents admire the daffodils. After a dreary winter, enjoying tea outdoors under the sunshine is a delightful way to celebrate spring.

    A Northumberland Beach Stroll

Is there anything more invigorating than breathing in the fresh sea air while strolling along a beach? Beadnell beach in Northumberland is a perfect spot for a leisurely walk, offering stunning views and plenty of dog-friendly cafés in the village. The Courtyard Café provides a delicious breakfast, fueling many memorable walks along the shore.
