The Anticipation of Cherry Blossom in Jerte Valley

It’s late March, and the beautiful Jerte Valley in Extremadura, Spain, is brimming with anticipation. The locals seem almost nervous, as if they are throwing a party and anxiously awaiting their guests. This annual spectacle revolves around the blooming of approximately two million cherry trees, which this year seem to be taking their time to shed their winter coats.

    Nature’s Timing and Unpredictability

Predicting cherry blossom is notoriously tricky. This year, due to an unusually wet March, the cherry trees are running three weeks late. With snow still adorning the surrounding sierras, the local tourist office in Cabezuela del Valle is scrambling to find alternative activities for the influx of visitors from Madrid. Unlike the unpredictability of wildlife sightings, the blossoming will eventually occur, much to the relief of all awaiting the floral spectacle.

Spain vs Japan: A Different Kind of Blossom

When one thinks of cherry blossoms, Japan often comes to mind, where sakura signifies the fleeting beauty of life. The Japanese experience of hanami, or flower viewing, contrasts sharply with the rural charm of Spain’s Jerte Valley. Here, the cherry trees are not just for show; they are the lifeblood of the local economy. I traveled from my home in Devon and was excited not just for the destination but also for the journey itself.

    • A picturesque train ride through the French Riviera to Barcelona.
    • Evening in Plasencia, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the Plaza Mayor.

    Exploring Jerte Valley

Upon arrival in Jerte, I found myself in a charming hospedería, a historic hotel that once served as a leather-tanning factory. My room offered a stunning view of the River Jerte and the cherry-laden hills. I joined fellow visitors in exploring the cobbled streets, taking in the local architecture and the anticipation of the bloom.

    A Local Experience

Venturing into the mountains, I walked the same rugged trails that Holy Roman Emperor Charles V once traversed. The journey led to breathtaking sites, including Los Pilones—natural pools shaped by the river. Back in Jerte, I savored local delicacies, including cherry-infused liqueurs and desserts that showcased the region’s bounty.

    • Cherry products: From liqueurs to jams, the culinary offerings are diverse.
    • Unique varieties: The Picota cherry, a local favorite, is gaining recognition beyond Spain.

    The Blossoming Begins

Finally, the moment arrived—overnight, the cherry trees donned their floral attire, signaling the start of the season. I explored the orchards and enjoyed a picnic beneath the blooming trees, where I was joined by fellow visitors eager for their own photos among the blossoms.

    Festivals and Celebrations

The cherry blossom festival is not just a celebration of nature; it’s a cultural event brimming with activities. The local tourist office has orchestrated a variety of events, from folk dancing to concerts, ensuring that visitors have ample opportunities to engage with the local culture.

    A Sweet Farewell

As my time in Jerte drew to a close, I reflected on the beauty of this valley and the community that thrives on its cherries. Soon, I would be enjoying Jerte’s Picotas back home, a sweet reminder of Spain’s very own sakura.
