Reflections on Corfu: A Tribute to Nikos Louvros

Reflections on Corfu: A Tribute to Nikos Louvros

As I recall the late winter of 2021, I find myself in a rather unexpected setting for a reflection on one of the Mediterranean’s finest islands: Kensal Green Cemetery in London. Here, among the crumbling mausoleums and the low-hanging clouds, I gather to say goodbye to a remarkable man, Nikos Louvros, who embodied the spirit of Corfu.

    A Journey to Discover Corfu

My quest for the quintessential Greek island took me across many landscapes. From the crowded shores of Mykonos and Santorini to the hidden gems of Kythira and Symi, none ever quite matched the idyllic vision that had been painted in my mind since childhood, inspired by the works of Robert Graves, Mary Renault, Lawrence Durrell, and John Fowles. Greece was, to me, an idea of freedom and contemplation—a tapestry of sand, salt, and thyme.

It was a spontaneous decision that led me to Corfu, where I was invited to play cricket. At that time, my knowledge of the island’s storied history and its unique cultural fusion of Greek, Venetian, and British influences was limited. I had yet to stroll along the Liston, the stunning colonnade reminiscent of Venice, with the cricket pitch nestled at its feet.

The Cricket Pitch and Cultural Exchange

My experience with the Lord’s Taverners, a UK sports charity team, introduced me to the warmth and skill of the Corfiots, who proved to be formidable cricketers. Despite our defeat, we were embraced by the local community, enjoying delightful dinners and camaraderie.

It was during one such dinner that I met Nikos and his wife, Annabelle. Their passion for Corfu and commitment to cricket sparked a vision: to establish a literary festival on the island.

The Birth of the Corfu Literary Festival

The Corfu Literary Festival started small—our inaugural event in 2017 was attended by as many speakers as there were audience members. However, with Nikos’s infectious optimism, we never felt deterred. Over the years, the festival blossomed, attracting renowned authors such as:

    • Stephen Fry
    • Sebastian Faulks
    • Bettany Hughes
    • Natalie Haynes
    • Matt Haig
    • Tom Holland

Each guest fell in love with Corfu, returning not just for the festival but for the island’s irresistible charm.

    A Lasting Legacy

Tragically, Nikos passed away from Covid in January, a loss felt profoundly across the island. He had a gift for unveiling Corfu’s beauty and drama, and now, in his absence, the literary festival continues to flourish. This September, it will explore the themes of Homer’s *Odyssey*, a fitting tribute to an island steeped in myth.

    Experiencing Corfu’s Natural Beauty

Corfu’s allure extends beyond its literary contributions; it is a place of breathtaking natural beauty. I learned the importance of swimming in the early morning, savoring the sea’s coolness, and enjoying leisurely afternoons by the shore. Noteworthy beaches include:

    • Myrtiotissa – Often hailed as ‘the most beautiful beach in the world’ by Lawrence Durrell.
    • Paleokastritsa – Known for its stunning monasteries and clear waters.
    • Agni Bay – A serene cove perfect for long, indulgent lunches.

    The Culinary Experience

Corfu’s cuisine, influenced by Venetian and Italian traditions, offers a delightful departure from typical Greek fare. Signature dishes like pastitsada and sofrito reflect the island’s rich culinary tapestry.

A Celebration of Life and Memory

In the summer of 2020, amidst the pandemic, we held the festival as a testament to resilience and the human spirit. It was during this time that we found joy under pressure, a reminder of the importance of connection, laughter, and beauty in our lives.

Reflecting on my time with Nikos, I cherish the memory of our day on the water, a moment of pure joy that felt like a rebellion against despair. Although he is gone, his spirit continues to inspire, reminding us that love for a place can endure beyond the individual.

    A Personal Tribute

My novel, *A Stranger in Corfu*, is dedicated to Nikos. It seeks to encapsulate the essence of Corfu—the stories, the landscapes, and the experiences that have shaped me. I encourage readers to embrace the island’s pace: swim often, savor local cuisine, and allow Corfu to reveal its magic gradually.

And should you find yourself offered a boat and an idea, I implore you to say yes.
