Delving into the Culinary Treasure of San Sabino

San Sabino, the much-anticipated seafood-centric offshoot of the renowned Don Angie, has quickly become one of the hardest reservations to secure in town. As I reflect on my experience, it’s evident that this restaurant is not just a meal; it’s an experience worth savoring.

A Taste of the Amalfi Coast

Upon entering San Sabino, I was immediately transported to the sun-kissed shores of the Amalfi Coast. The decor radiates warmth with:

    • Warm, sunny yellows
    • Pops of Mediterranean blues
    • Hand-carved bar stools and plush leather booths

It strikes a perfect balance between casual charm and upscale sophistication, making it a quintessential West Village dining destination.

    Start with a Cocktail

No visit is complete without indulging in one of their expertly crafted cocktails. I opted for:

    • Negronis
    • Perfectly balanced dry martinis, garnished with a thick lemon peel

These drinks set the tone for a delightful evening, echoing the classic Italian tradition.

    Reimagining Italian-American Cuisine

Chef Angie Rito, with her impressive background from Torrisi and Don Angie, takes Italian-American cuisine to new heights at San Sabino. The menu is refreshingly light, featuring:

    • Exceptional salads, including their unique take on Caesar—the tricolore Sabino
    • Crudos, with standout dishes like spicy tuna paired with broken arancini
    • A thoughtfully curated selection of pasta dishes

In a bold departure from the heavy red sauce dishes often associated with Italian fare, Rito embraces a fresher perspective.

    The Seafood Experience

Tempted as I was by the classic meatballs and Sunday sauce manicotti, I decided to fully embrace the seafood offerings. Highlights included:

    • Delicate crab-filled farfalle, perfectly sauced
    • Lobster triangoli, a delightful twist on traditional pasta

One cannot visit San Sabino without trying the restaurant’s viral sensation, the shrimp parm, presented sizzling on a silver platter. While it’s undeniably good, I found it more of a crowd-pleaser than a must-have. Instead, I recommend focusing on Rito’s lighter seafood options.

    For Those Craving Comfort

For diners still yearning for a taste of classic Italian-American flavors, Rito’s meatball spiedini, seasoned to perfection and served on a skewer, can be ordered as a delightful side dish. This offers the best of both worlds—traditional comfort food alongside inventive seafood dishes.

In conclusion, San Sabino is a culinary gem that successfully marries the familiar comforts of Italian-American cuisine with a refreshing, seafood-forward approach. For those fortunate enough to secure a reservation, prepare for a dining experience that is both exquisite and memorable.
