Exploring the Depths of Grief and Love in “Guess How Much I Love You”

The experience of entering the auditorium for Luke Norris’s latest play, “Guess How Much I Love You,” is marked by the presence of trigger warnings. This proactive measure underscores the play’s intense themes of pregnancy and grief, offering a harrowing yet insightful portrayal of a couple navigating loss. However, it’s essential to note that amidst the pain, there are threads of humor and profound reflection that make the narrative resonate deeply without becoming overwhelming.

    A Relationship in Turmoil

At the heart of the play is an unnamed thirtysomething couple, whose journey through grief is both relatable and heart-wrenching. The dynamic between them is electric, characterized by a sparky contrariness:

    • She (Rosie Sheehy): A clever and ferocious woman, she embodies strength and defiance, always ready to engage in a verbal spar.
    • He (Robert Aramayo): A gentler soul, he employs humor and poetry to soften the edges of her fierceness, creating a delicate balance in their interactions.

The opening scene captures the couple’s palpable tension as they await the results of a 20-week ultrasound scan. Their dialogue is akin to a contact sport, fast-paced and charged with emotion, setting the stage for the challenges they will face.

    Confronting Heartbreaking Choices

As the narrative unfolds, we encounter the painful reality of the couple’s situation. The news they receive forces them into a corner, compelling them to make heart-wrenching decisions about their unborn child. Sheehy and Aramayo deliver explosive performances, each mirroring the other’s intensity in ways that are both riveting and heartbreaking. The darkness of their circumstances prompts the question, “Are we at the bottom yet?”—a poignant reflection on the depths of despair.

    Masterful Direction and Staging

Under the direction of Jeremy Herrin, the play seamlessly shifts from moments of savagery to tenderness, expertly navigating the terrain of grief. Norris, previously recognized for his acting, solidifies his reputation as a playwright with remarkable depth and flair. The production is visually striking, with Grace Smart’s set design transforming swiftly between scenes, while Jessica Hung Han Yun’s lighting enhances the emotional landscape.

    The Complexity of Love

The couple’s confrontations are raw and visceral, laying bare the unspeakable truths of their relationship. Lines like “Sometimes I hate you,” coupled with wishes for each other’s demise, illustrate the complexity of love intertwined with grief. Yet, amid the chaos and tears, what remains is a testament to enduring love—this is a tear-jerker that is 100% heart and 0% sentimentality.

A Powerful Start to the Season

“Guess How Much I Love You” marks a remarkable beginning to the Royal Court’s 70th anniversary season. It is an emotional tour de force that challenges the audience to reflect on love and loss in a way that is both intimate and universal.
