The Magic of “Thursday Special”: A Film That Resonates

In an exciting collaboration, acclaimed Indian filmmakers Shoojit Sircar and Vikramaditya Motwane have come together to produce a remarkable short film titled “Thursday Special.” This film, crafted by Indian National Award winner Varun Tandon, has garnered impressive accolades on the international festival circuit, marking it as a significant contribution to contemporary cinema.

A Heartfelt Exploration of Love and Time

At its core, “Thursday Special” is an intimate drama that delves into the themes of love, companionship, and the passage of time. Recently, it received the Most Poetic Film Award at Serbia’s Küstendorf Film Festival 2025, a distinction handpicked by the esteemed director Emir Kusturica. This recognition not only emphasizes the film’s artistic merit but also highlights its emotional depth.

    Meet the Characters

The narrative centers around an elderly married couple, Ram and Shakuntala, portrayed by Anubha Fatehpuria and Ramakanth Dayama. Their relationship is beautifully anchored in their shared passion for food and a cherished tradition of celebrating Thursdays together. The film is produced by Karan Luthra, with Tandon serving as the scriptwriter alongside co-writer and executive producer Krati Tandon.

    Filmmakers’ Perspectives

Shoojit Sircar, renowned for his previous works like “Piku” and “Vicky Donor,” expressed his admiration for the film’s simplicity and subtle storytelling. He noted:

    • “Thursday Special really moved me with its simplicity and gentle storytelling.”
    • He praised Tandon’s nuanced portrayal of marriage and middle-age relationships, emphasizing its heartfelt approach.
    • Sircar drew parallels to his unreleased film “Shoe Bite,” underscoring the delicate handling of the themes presented in “Thursday Special.”

Vikramaditya Motwane, known for his innovative contributions to Indian cinema, echoed this sentiment by emphasizing the film’s focus on often overlooked narratives. He stated:

    • “Though all the stories we tell are human stories, we tend to forget the unique stories found in the mundane lives of everyday people.”
    • Motwane believes the film encourages discussion beyond aesthetic appreciation, highlighting the depth of its story and emotional resonance.

    A Vision Realized

For Varun Tandon, this project is a dream come true. He reflected on the story’s significance to him, saying:

    • “This is a story that has stayed in my heart for years.”
    • Tandon expressed the excitement of bringing these characters to life and exploring their intricate relationship through their shared passion for food.

    A Journey of Recognition

Since its premiere at Mecal Pro in Barcelona, “Thursday Special” has amassed over 25 awards across various global festivals, including:

    • Best Narrative Short at the New York Indian Film Festival
    • Best International Short Film at the Adelaide Independent Film Festival
    • Best Narrative Short at the Tryon International Film Festival

The film is set to be released on January 29 via the Humans of Cinema YouTube channel, and I encourage everyone to catch this poignant tale that promises to resonate with audiences worldwide.
