Community Spirit Shines at Oakbank Inn’s Grand Opening

Community Spirit Shines at Oakbank Inn’s Grand Opening

It’s a momentous occasion in Sandbank, Argyll, as the Oakbank Inn opens its doors for the first time in over three years. The atmosphere is electric, with locals gathering to celebrate the return of a beloved community hub.

    Warm Welcome and Community Pride

On a crisp, clear night, the Oakbank Inn radiates warmth and charm. With Christmas lights twinkling and a cozy glow emanating from within, it sets the perfect scene for a welcoming gathering. By 6 PM, the excitement is palpable as the locals, including Debbie Rycroft and her family, fill the space with laughter and camaraderie.

    A Journey of Resilience

The journey to this opening has not been without its challenges. The Oakbank, a historical landmark that has served the community for 160 years, closed its doors in late 2022 due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This left Sandbank without a pub, a significant loss for the rural community.

Community Efforts to Revive the Inn

In early 2023, a dedicated group of locals, led by Sue McKillop, banded together to purchase the Oakbank. Their commitment was steadfast, despite facing numerous hurdles.

    • Secured a Scottish Land grant of nearly £150,000.
    • Raised over £23,000 through community shares.
    • Invested thousands of volunteer hours to renovate the establishment.

By April, they had the keys, and since then, it has been a whirlwind of activity leading up to the grand opening.

    Planning for the Future

Development officer Dawn Petherick highlights the importance of the Oakbank as more than just a pub. It aims to be a community hub, offering:

    • Knitting groups
    • Book clubs
    • Exhibitions
    • “Sober nights” to encourage inclusivity

    Facing Challenges Head-On

Despite the excitement, there’s a collective understanding of the challenges ahead. Stephen Mitchell from the Strone Inn echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the hard work that lies ahead for the Oakbank team. However, the statistics are promising; community-owned pubs have a remarkable five-year survival rate of 98% according to Plunkett UK.

    Enhancing the Community Experience

    Future plans include:

    • Refurbishing upstairs accommodation
    • Creating a studio/gallery space
    • Renovating the commercial kitchen with local produce

With the scenic Holy Loch just a stone’s throw away, the Oakbank has plans to connect with the marina, enhancing the experience for boaters and locals alike.

A Hub of History and Future Potential

The Oakbank Inn is not just a place to grab a pint; it embodies the spirit of community resilience. As locals like Tony, Rob, and Alan enjoy their drinks, the importance of having a local pub resonates deeply. It’s a space where history meets future potential, paving the way for a vibrant community spirit.

As we celebrate this remarkable reopening, it’s clear that the Oakbank Inn holds a special place in the hearts of Sandbank residents. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together with shared purpose.
