We are barreling toward fall, and I, for one, couldn’t be happier. Fall in New York City brings gorgeous foliage in Central Park, cooler temperatures, and (most importantly) the year’s best fashion. Out: Long Trench CoatsIn: Cropped Trench Coats
Amazon
A trench coat is a New Yorker-loved staple you can wear in fashionable cities all over the world, though it’s particularly beloved in Paris and London. Last year, cropped versions emerged as the jacket of the season, and I think the style will be even more popular in 2025. This Tankaneo version is gorgeous, with a dramatic lapel, cuffed sleeves, and a long belt that’s perfect for cinching. Looking for an ‘it’ outfit formula for fall? Pair this jacket with trendy capri pants and your favorite sleek shoe.
Out: Quarter-zip Sweaters
In: Polo Sweaters
Amazon
It’s hard to say the classic quarter-zip sweater will ever be out, but this season it’s getting a worthy rival: the polo sweater. With a preppy collar and button-up closure, it’s a dressier version of the athleisure zip-up style, and it’s more versatile, too. Pair it with jeans, trousers, and even skirts for a put-together look. I love the faux pearl buttons on this Anrabess Polo Sweater, they give it a sophisticated look that makes it an ideal layer to travel with. More playful dressers will love the Saodimallsu Short-sleeve Sweater that can easily transition from summer to fall.
Out: Blazers
In: Bomber Jackets
Amazon
A good blazer is one of the most essential wardrobe staples, but I’ve never been able to pull one off. Lucky for me, the suede bomber jacket is taking over this season, and when styled right, it has all the dress-up power of a blazer. I love this one from Bnigung and this Tankaneo Cropped Faux Suede Jacket that can easily replace your dated blazer.
Out: Leggings
In: Track pants
Amazon
Track pants were everywhere this summer, and I’m willing to bet they’ll continue to thrive in fall. Not only did they appear on the runway early this year, but they’ve been sported by celebrities like Oprah. They’re the most comfortable pants for long-haul flights, and fashion insiders have styled them with feminine tops, button-down sweaters, and polished jackets—a far cry from the sporty stylings we’ve seen in the past. I love these classic Tapata track pants, which have the perfect relaxed cut, and I’d style them with a feminine blouse or simple white sweater.
Out: Gingham
In: Plaid
Amazon
Gingham was everywhere this summer, but the trend won’t last through the cooler months. Swap out your picnic-printed pieces for something cozier, like this plaid flannel. While the traditional cool-weather pattern never really goes out of style, I predict it will be bigger than ever this year (just take a peek at Calvin Klein’s fall collection to see why).
Out: Mesh Flats
In: Slipper Mules
Amazon
This year, mesh and jelly flats have taken many forms, but one of the most popular iterations is the mule silhouette. The backless design is elevated yet laid-back, and if you’re not ready to give it up yet, you’re in luck. Prepare to see plenty of slipper mules this fall. With a flat sole and closed toe, these shoes blend dressy and casual elements for an effortlessly refined shoe. Whether you opt for this studded pair or another style (I love the bow-accented and office-ready versions, too), you’ll look stylish and feel like you’re wearing slippers thanks to this trend.
Out: Chunky Cardigans
In: Ponchos
Amazon
One of my most stylish friends just wore a crochet poncho as a swim cover-up on our girls’ trip, and now I’m convinced that ponchos are majorly in for fall. (If you don’t believe me, search ‘poncho’ on TikTok.) This sleek, $30 version is perfect for the cold months. You can also opt for something extra cozy with a cashmere version or a cable-knit poncho.
Out: Maxi Skirts
In: Knee-length skirts
Amazon
Before you add another tiered maxi skirt to your wardrobe, consider adding a fresher style instead. I’m already spotting knee-length skirts everywhere in New York City, and I think the style will only get more popular as cool weather creeps in. I’d embrace early-oughts nostalgia by pairing this knee-length skirt with tall boots. You can also snag fall-ready knit and denim skirts for under $50 at Amazon.
Out: Mary Janes
In: Boat Shoes
Amazon
Mary Janes have been the ‘it’ shoe for a couple of years, but it seems the style’s tenure is slowly coming to an end. I’m embracing the latest shoe craze that’s taking its place: the boat shoe. Boat shoes have been around for decades, and they’re beloved for their preppy look and impressive comfort. This sleek Cushionaire pair reminds me of the latest designer versions, although you can’t go wrong with classic Sperrys, either. Don’t limit yourself to wearing these shoes in nautical destinations—even city dwellers are getting in on this trend.
Out: Linen Pants
In: Satin pants
Amazon
If you’re the type to live in linen pants all summer, the changing of the seasons can be a distressing time. Few styles live up to the effortless sophistication of linen pants, and in cooler weather, we often have to resign ourselves to less comfortable pairs (or sweatpants). Thanks to the latest satin pants trend, though, I’ll be staying just as comfortable through the cold months.
These Betusline trousers have a sophisticated look, with front pleats, a belted, elastic waistband, and a flowy silhouette to keep you comfortable. I’m also eyeing the Xibaobao Satin Wide-leg Pants, which would pair well with chunky knits when temperatures drop.
Out: Moto Boots
In: Hunter boots
Amazon
Each year, fall brings a different trending boot style, and this season, I predict we’ll see a resurgence of Hunter boots. Pair them with shorts or mini dresses for a practical yet stylish look that feels straight out of London. This green version is so classic, although I’m also a fan of the high-gloss red pair that makes an even bigger statement. But they are an investment, so if you’re shopping for a weatherproof boot that’s a bit easier on the wallet, the Planone Tall Rain Boots are highly rated and come in a variety of stylish colors.
Out: Butter Yellow
In: Mustard
Amazon
I’m not completely calling off butter yellow, but I’m sprinkling in some deeper tones as we head into fall. Namely, I’ll be searching for some mustard shades, from the Saodimallsu Turtleneck sweater to these Gola Elan Sneakers. Jewel tones will be back this fall, so be sure to snag deep reds and emerald greens, too.
