India say Rishabh Pant is available to bat if required later in the fourth Test despite the injury to his right foot, but he will not be able to keep wicket.
Pant, 27, was struck while batting on day one at Old Trafford and had to retire hurt on 37.
Substitute fielder Dhruv Jurel will take the gloves for the remainder of the Test, as he did in the third Test when Pant injured a finger, but Pant arrived at the ground for day two and is “available to bat as per team requirements”.
If he bats he will not be allowed a runner, after they were banned from Tests by a law change in 2011.
Pant was seen in his whites in the dressing room after play resumed on Thursday morning.
He was unable to walk after the blow the previous evening, which came when he attempted to reverse sweep Chris Woakes, and left the field on a buggy.
The flamboyant left-hander, who returned to Test cricket last September almost two years after a car crash in which he nearly lost his life, has been one of the players of the series prior to his injury.
He scored hundreds in both innings of the first Test and fifties in each of the second and third Tests.
