Iran loaded naval mines onto vessels in the Persian Gulf last month, intensifying concerns in Washington that Tehran was preparing to close the Strait of Hormuz after Israel’s strikes on Iran, said two US intelligence sources. The loading of the mines – though they have not yet been deployed in the strait – indicates that Tehran might have been intent on closing one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.
